Context
A structured approach to music distribution and digital release management: preparing metadata, delivering releases to platforms on time, and coordinating every release so it launches cleanly across streaming services in Uganda, the DRC, Nigeria, and beyond.
The Challenge
Most independent artists in Uganda, the DRC and Nigeria release music the same way: a finished song is uploaded a few days before release, metadata is typed in a hurry, and nobody checks where it actually lands. The results are predictable. Songs appear under the wrong artist profile, featured artists are missing, artwork is rejected, pre-saves never happen, and editorial teams never see the record in time.
The deeper problem is that distribution is treated as a single upload rather than as an operation. Without a structured process, every release starts from zero, catalogue data drifts across platforms, and royalties become difficult to trace back to the right song.
My Role
- Metadata and credit preparation
- ISRC and catalogue management
- Release delivery and scheduling
- Editorial playlist pitching
- Profile preparation across platforms
- Release-week coordination
Strategy and Actions
I rebuilt release delivery as a repeatable workflow that starts weeks before release day.
Release calendar. Every single, EP or album is scheduled three to four weeks ahead, giving room for distributor review, platform ingestion, pitching and pre-save campaigns.
Clean metadata. Titles, primary and featured artists, songwriters, producers, ISRCs, genres, language and explicit flags are prepared in one master sheet and checked before submission, so the same information appears on every platform.
Profile control. Artist profiles are claimed and verified on Spotify for Artists, Apple Music for Artists, YouTube, Audiomack and Boomplay, and duplicate or misattributed profiles are corrected.
Platform coverage. Releases reach global services and the platforms that matter most in Africa, Boomplay and Audiomack in particular, rather than a default list.
Release-day checks. Every link is opened and verified, the smart link is published, and any ingestion error is escalated to the distributor immediately.
Results
The workflow now underpins the releases I manage. It has been applied across the catalogue of Fik Fameica, an established Ugandan artist with more than 60 million YouTube views, and to developing artists such as Mozelo Kidz, whose Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube profiles were verified in a single day.
Releases arrive on time and on the correct profiles, artwork and credits are consistent across platforms, and each song can be traced from submission through to its royalty statements. Artists and their teams spend release week promoting the music instead of fixing errors.
Lessons Learned
Distribution quality is decided before the upload, not after it. Clean metadata and a realistic lead time do more for a release than any last-minute promotion. In African markets especially, coverage on Boomplay and Audiomack is not optional; it is often where the core audience listens first.
